14. Start Investing with Just ₹500 a Month
One of the biggest myths about investing is that you need a lot of money to start. The truth is, you can begin your wealth-building journey with as little as ₹500 per month through a SIP in a mutual fund. The most important step isn't the amount – it's simply starting.
Step 1: Complete Your KYC. Before investing in any mutual fund, you need to be KYC (Know Your Customer) compliant. This is a one-time process that can be done online through platforms like KFintech or CAMS, or through your chosen investment app.
Step 2: Choose an Investment Platform. You can invest directly through the mutual fund company's website, or through aggregator apps like Groww, Zerodha Coin, Paytm Money, or ET Money. All these platforms offer direct plans, saving you commission.
Step 3: Pick Your First Fund. For beginners, a Nifty 50 index fund or a flexi-cap fund is an excellent starting point. Look for a fund with a track record of at least 5 years and an AUM of over ₹500 crore.
Step 4: Set Up Your SIP. Choose the monthly amount (₹500 minimum), the date (ideally just after your salary credit date), and the duration. Link your bank account and set up the auto-debit mandate. You can instantly estimate your future returns using our free online SIP Calculator to see how even ₹500/month can grow into a substantial corpus over decades.
Step 5: Automate and Forget. The beauty of SIP is its set-and-forget nature. As your income grows, increase your SIP amount. A ₹500 SIP started at age 25 and increased by 10% annually can build a corpus of over ₹1 crore by age 60. Start today using our SIP Calculator.
